Replacement Upvc Window Handles
The majority of
replacement handles for windows window handles made of upvc include everything you require to complete the task. However, if the old handle had pins or screws holding it, these will need to be removed. Next remove the'snap in' cover on the base of the handle.
Next you will need to determine what kind of window and lock your new handle for This is vital!
Espag
Espag handles are a type of multipoint locks fitted to casement window types like uPVC or wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned it will activate a series of locks around the window's perimeter. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles. They provide more security than the typical single point lock that is found on older frames.
There are a variety of options to choose from that include inline and cranked handles that can be operated using either the left or right hand. There are also ergonomic handles that improve the look and feel of your window, as well as handles.
If you're looking to replace your existing uPVC window handle with an espag handle, you will have to determine the size of the spindle that is installed and measure the measurement from the base of the handle to ensure that you purchase the correct replacement. This measurement is known as step height and will help you find the perfect uPVC handle for your home.
You may need to remove any screw covers that protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and
domestic if that's the case, use a screwdriver or pliers to break the pins that hold the handle. After you have removed the screws or pins that secure the spindle then you can remove the handle.
After you have removed the handle, you will be able to access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows and remove the cockspur block located next to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The new uPVC window handles you have purchased should be able to fit on the cockspur wedge block and then into the handle spindle which will allow the window to open once again. The ideal solution is to replace the cockspur wedge block with an entirely new one when you change your uPVC handle to ensure it is securely secured.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles can be found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is closed and rotates into a wedge-shaped plastic catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in various nose heights that can be adapted to the existing frame.
The handle is secured by the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) that is attached to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, however a deadlock with a locking mechanism is a possibility to add additional security.
The replacement handles for cockspurs are simple to install. All you need is the correct backset as well as a new set (supplied). The backset is the distance from the baseplate of the window to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a myriad of variations however, so it is crucial to measure the handle prior to buying the handle (see video below for how).
This type of window handle can be substituted by simply removing the existing handle and taking off the spindle,
domestic or in certain instances, the entire handle assembly. The new handle is fixed with a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screws come in zinc or brass finishes to match the hardware and there is also the possibility of a self-locking version.
This cockspur handle is easy to install and is ideal to replace or repair old uPVC Windows. They are an unidirectional design that makes them suitable for all backsets and profiles. Each handle comes with three packers, each with different thicknesses. These are neatly installed on the underside of the handle noses and can be combined to create backsets as small as 9mm or as high as 21mm. They are available in left and right handed models and are available with nonlockable or lockable models, with a variety of nose heights.
Tilt and Turn
The most prestigious European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for a long time, however it's just now beginning to catch on in the United States. They combine the functionality of three different window styles into one - tilt, pivot, and in-swing. This makes them perfect for older homes since they can provide a greater level of ventilation than standard window types.
When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. By turning the handle either 90or 180 degrees, based on the type of tilt-and-turn window the sash will slide inwards and the window tilts inwards to allow for air to circulate. This is a great option to let air circulate without the need to open a large windows, which could pose a security risk if it is not secured properly when opening.
The sash can also be opened fully by turning the handle 90° or 180°@. This permits complete air exchange, which is particularly useful for rooms that are smoky or where smoke or other odors are likely to accumulate. It also makes cleaning the outside of the glass much more easy because it can be done from inside the home - a task that often requires ladders that are not safe.
Tilt and turn windows are very secure. When locked in the closed position they are difficult to open from the outside and they come with double seals that stop rainwater from getting into the home when they are in the tilted or in-swing position. This feature is particularly useful for older homes where burglars tend to target traditional windows which can be opened using side hinges.
Spade
There are a variety of handles that can be installed on double-glazed windows made of upvc. The two main types are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There are also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you choose will depend on your preferences and the type of windows you have.
You must know how the handle you have currently is attached to the frame to choose the right replacement Upvc handle. This is known as handing. It is a crucial piece of information, especially when buying online as some handle variations don't fit all windows. Some cockspur handles, for instance, are angled whereas others are straight and can turn left or right. You will also need to know what the spindle's length is, which is the distance from the base of the handle to the top of the handle.
Another aspect to consider when choosing the right handle is determining whether your windows need a restrictor or not. These are usually used in high rise flats or commercial buildings, but they're not required for most
domestic homes. Lastly, you should also take into consideration step height, which is the distance from the top of the screw plate to the apex of the handle.
The word spade is derived from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada and has been translated into numerous languages including German spaten and Low German spathen. In the 1920s, during the Harlem Renaissance in New York City spade started to be used as a derogatory term for black people. Spade has since risen to prominence in pop culture and is now a well-known symbol of African American heritage and pride.
It is important to get the correct size when replacing a handle made of Cadenza. Handles are available in straight and angled styles that differ by only a few microns. The handle head may vary between a D and T shape, or have no handles at all.
